51st BIOTA Annual National Convention and Scientific Sessions

University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna

April 7, 2016 – April 9, 2016

Welcome to the 51st BIOTA Annual National Convention & Scientific Sessions!
and the BIOTA 50th Foundation Anniversary!

The 51st BIOTA will be held at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Laguna on April 7 to 9, 2016.

The very first BIOTA National Convention in 1966 was held in UPLB under the leadership of then BIOTA President, Prof. Pablo Alfonso. And for this year's convention, it is just fitting to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of the association where it all started.

This year's theme is "BIOTA@50: Keeping the Fire of Knowledge Burning" which was taken from one of the lines of the BIOTA hymn and which we hope will be the association's aspiration @50 and beyond.

So join us BIOTAns and interested participants to this year's convention that will focus on sharing teaching practices and experiences in employing innovations in biology education to strengthen curricular reforms.

Major activities include plenary sessions, seminars, workshops, hands-on activities, poster exhibits, BIOTA memorabilia display, commercial exhibits, and educational field trip.

The activities are designed to:

  • Enable sharing of research findings, teaching practices, and experiences in the implementation of innovations in biology education to support curriculum reforms in different educational levels.
  • Stress the responsibility of biology teachers and researchers in promoting interest, understanding, and appreciation of the biological sciences; and
  • Provide a venue for presentation of current researches, projects, and experiences on continuing professional development to enhance the capabilities of biology teachers, and help achieve excellence in Biology education and research in the country.

There will be simultaneous sessions during the convention. You may choose from the following sub-themes below when you submit your abstract:

  • Pedagogical practices (e.g., inquiry-based, student-centered, multidisciplinary) as a way of acquisition of basic concepts in Life Science domains
  • Research in the life sciences
  • Technology in Biology education
  • Integration of global issues and solutions (biodiversity and climate change)
  • Bioethics(ethical issues)
  • Multi- and interdisciplinary research
  • Others (pls. specify)
Deadline for abstract submission is: February 14, 2016
Important! Please indicate in a footnote in the docx file you uploaded if you wish to submit the abstract for inclusion in competing category for the particular track it was submitted to.
